Defensive Manipulation Of Tokens

  • August 6, 2023

This is when a player who is waiting to act manages his chips in such a way that he may be interested in calling or betting. This will almost always be done defensively, with a weak or medium strength hand, with the aim of discouraging an opponent from betting.

An obvious example of this is when a player waiting for river action takes their chips and pushes them slightly forward, as if they are ready to call a bet. However, the defensive treatment of tokens can be much more subtle. A player can place his hand on, or near, his chips to subtly imply an interest in betting or calling.

Players who are defensive are certainly able to call or throw. But the larger the bet, the more likely the player is to fold. In fixed limit games, you will see a lot of defensive chip management behavior followed by a call, as the bets are lower. In the no-limit, however, defensive chip manipulation will more often be followed by a fold.

While an opponent can call or fold to a bet, the most important point about this behavior is that if you are pretty sure an opponent is acting defensively, a raise is super unlikely. Excluding a raise can allow you to cash in on limit hands that you could have played otherwise.

Restraint Or Large Movements

Some players will have tendencies related to loosening or restraining their body after making large bets. As a general rule, players who bluff will tend to be more still than players who bet strong hands. This has to do with the primitive physical instinct to “freeze” and avoid being noticed when threatened.

But remember that this is a general trend for tells in poker and should only be applied if you have common sense that it is correct for a specific player.

Often the most valuable way to observe this pattern is through small, rather subtle bodily movements. For example, let’s say you saw a player make two big river bets with strong hands. Each time you noticed that he had a lot of relaxed little movements; he played with his chips, he flexed his neck a bit, his arms moved on the table, his gaze moved from his opponent to the cards and moved several times, etc.

Later you study this player as he bluffed and this time he was staring stoically at the cards on the board and his body was very still. It is likely that this player has this tendency.

Immediate Calls

Of all the tells, immediate calls are probably the most useful, both for online menangking88 e wallet poker and table games. When a player immediately calls a bet, it means he has immediately ruled out a raise. Because players with strong hands are often focused on maximizing value, the immediate call is therefore unlikely to be made with a strong hand. If a player with a strong hand decides to call, it will usually take a few seconds for him to make that decision. For these reasons, immediate calls usually indicate weak or medium strength hands.

When it comes to poker tells, immediate calls can often rule out big draws as well. For example, with no limit, a player who calls immediately on a JvTs 5c flop is unlikely to have an Ace or even KQ flush draw. Most players with strong draws will at least consider raising here, even if they end up simply deciding to call.

If you are bluffing and an opponent immediately calls you, it may encourage you to bluff on the next card. If you bet a strong hand, an opponent’s immediate call will often mean that a player will fold at another full-size bet. In this case, you may be influenced to make your next bet smaller, or maybe even to check.
